Congratulations to Susan Mitchell-Herzfeld

Susan Mitchell-Herzfeld

Susan Mitchell-Herzfeld, director of the Bureau of Evaluation and Research, has been selected to receive the 2012 Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF) Commissioner’s Award. This prestigious award honors one recipient from each state, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia and the territories for making an exceptional contribution to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Sue was nominated by the New York State Governor’s Office.

The award is made in recognition of Sue’s leadership, significant contributions, dedication, and accomplishments.  Sue and her team have received national recognition for their work, notably the evaluations of Healthy Families New York and Family Assessment Response.  Those evaluations, along with their on-going work on child protective risk assessment, involvement of juvenile delinquents in the child welfare system, and domestic violence in CPS cases, and other OCFS priorities, have advanced the knowledge of the entire child welfare field.

The award will be presented at a special Commissioner’s Award Ceremony during the 18th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, to be held April 16-20, 2012, in Washington, DC.

The bureau is part of the OCFS’s Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Development, headed by Nancy Martinez.  Sue has worked for the state since 1982 when she began at DSS. She earned her master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University at Albany.
